The Sloatsburg Village Board met for the last time in March last week and provided several easter eggs of information buried in its agenda.
Upcoming community events include the Easter Egg Hunt for Village of Sloatsburg Children at St. Mary’s Villa this coming Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. The egg hunt is open to Sloatsburg kids from pre-school up through 5th grade. The Sloatsburg Fire Department will hold its Annual Meeting today, April 3, to elect its slate of officers for both the Civil and Line arms of the department.
Trustee Barbara Berntsen announced two upcoming events that are part of Harmony Hall’s spring schedule, including an April 15 fundraiser with veteran appraiser Ken Lisner. For $15, Lisner will review up to three items as part of Harmony Hall’s Got Treasure? event. No stamps or coins will be reviewed. All proceeds from the event will support restoration at the Jacob Sloat House. Berntsen also discussed a May 15 Scavenger Hunt Harmony Hall will host as part of Ramapo History Week.
Trustee Pete Akey, who along with Berntsen helps oversee Sloatsburg’s public recreation facilities, updated the board on the Municipal Pool, which is scheduled to open in late June. Akey said that the village is finalizing a contract with SnackRite Vending, a snack vending company out of Walden, NY that will provide vending snack and drink machines at both the pool and community fields. The contract calls for SnackRite to provide machines and split proceeds from sales with the village.
Akey also announed the hiring of new Swim Facility Supervisor Dee Leone and new head life guard Robert Stein. Leone will take over day-to-day management of the municipal pool while Stein will oversee assembling the pool’s staff of lifeguards.
Mayor Carl Wright officially congratulated Suffern High School Geena DiGiacomo and Jillian Stella on being selected to participate in New York State History Day on April 23. Residents of Sloatsburg, both students are part of the Suffern History Team.
The board then adjourned the public portion of the meeting to enter into an executive session to discuss an on-going suit between Clarkstown Landfill and the Village of Sloatsburg. The village is negotiating a settlement to a long-standing dumping charge related to the landfill that took place in the 1960s. The dispute involves federal environmental regulatory oversight of landfills.
