United Water New York is beginning an infrastructure upgrade along Rt. 17 in Sloatsburg that will run from Post Road to the Tuxedo Manor Apartments in Tuxedo, a 1.25 mile stretch of road. UWNY customers along the route will receive a temporary above-ground water system during the project.

The construction project will take place primarily along the southbound lane and begin after 9 a.m. and end before 5 p.m. to avoid drive time traffic. United Water New York contractor J. Fletcher Creamer will begin the project by temporarily installing an above-ground water system to homes, businesses and hydrants along the route. According to UWNY, the temporary water system meets federal and state standards for safe drinking water. Sections of the southbound right lane will be closed during construction hours.

Village Trustee Tom Buckley has quietly been advocating for improved water flow and reliability in Sloatsburg since elected to the Village Board. Buckley also currently chairs the Chiefs Utility Committee for the Rockland County Chiefs Association which meets bi-monthly and deals with any utility issues fire departments might have throughout the county.

Buckley said that the United Water New York will replace an 8-inch water main that should significantly increase water flow. During Public Service Commission hearings in Albany throughout, Buckley advocated on behalf of the Chief’s Association, town and village regarding water issues.

“We’ve been complaining since the fire up at Jessie’s Bagels years ago,” Buckley said about the water main that runs along that northwest section of Sloatsburg. Buckley said he requested United Water replace the 8-inch pipe with a 10-inch pipe but UW determined that the 8-inch pipe would increase water quality and service.

United Water will use trenchless technology or pipe bursting that will break up the old pipe and pull through a new plastic water main behind it — without needing to dig out the old pipe and retrench. The new technology will allow for less disruption and less environmental impact.

“We’re very excited to utilize trenchless technology for this project,” said Chris Graziano, operations director for UWNY.

The United Water New York infrastructure upgrade along Rt. 7 from Post Road to Tuxedo Manor Apartments in Tuxedo is scheduled to run through October – January.
