The Kids Get Musical

Posted on 10 December 2012 by Editor

The Sharks and Jets will sing and dance it out on stage this spring when Suffern High School presents West Side Story for its Spring Musical.

But first come auditions. The call has been sent out to aspiring performers for Spring Musical tryouts this Tuesday and Wednesday, December 11 and 12. Final call backs are scheduled for Friday, December 14.

West Side Story is fashioned after William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, with contemporary touches that involve gang rivalry, forbidden love and jumping dance numbers. A sort of bookmark in American theater that introduced kinetic dance numbers and Stephen Sondheim’s sophisticated lyrics, the show was created by a who’s-who of Broadway theater — with a book by Authur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

Kathy Muenz, who runs The Dance Loft in Suffern, will direct and choreograph this year’s musical. Musical and technical whiz Dan McCarter will once again take on those responsibilities, leading the music portion of the production. Allison Meyer will act as vocal director and Rich Murray will be charged with set design.

West Side Story is scheduled for performances this spring.
