Rockland County recently held an interagency oil train drill, where some 30 county groups participated in a mock train crash disaster. The effort was a direct response to growing concern that the increase in mile long freight trains of Bakken crude oil rolling through Rockland on rail has increased the probability of a spill disaster. The Cub Scouts of Tuxedo and Sloatsburg are cleaning up around here.
As part of the Keep Rockland Beautiful campaign, the scouts from Cub Scout Pack 46 cleaned up around the Sloatsburg municipal building and train station, picking up the trash that other folks discarded. Continue Reading

The Tuxedo mutual aid call went out to the Sloatsburg Fire Department just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning. A house fire on Schoolhouse Road, next to George F. Baker High School, had spread next door to a neighbor’s property and soon enough fire departments from the surrounding communities were on the call. The Sloatsburg Ambulance Corps also responded to the emergency. Continue Reading

Perhaps it’s a bane of bedroom communities, the lack of local commerce and identifiable cultural identity; but the corridor that winds through Sloatsburg and Tuxedo appears to be suffering from an economic malaise. United Water New York is beginning an infrastructure upgrade along Rt. 17 in Sloatsburg that will run from Post Road to the Tuxedo Manor Apartments in Tuxedo, a 1.25 mile stretch of road.
