With school now out for the year, summer vacation has officially arrived, complete with camp plans and thoughts of vacation trips. But don’t forget to read a book or two.
The Sloatsburg Public Library’s popular Summer Reading Program is one way local kids can keep up their reading in a fun way. Geared to elementary school and middle school students, the program kicks off on Tuesday, July 5, with its annual Summer Reading Party.
Library Manager Annmarie McAnany said the local Summer Reading program is one of the library’s most important community outreach efforts.
“It’s definitely a vital part of the library,” said McAnany, who started off at Sloatsburg Library in charge of children’s programming and helped build the summer reading effort into a popular educational enhancement program for village kids.
The activities get underway at 2:15 p.m. and include a complete summer reading sign-up process and featured entertainment by Christopher Agostino and his outstanding Story Faces.
Agostino is a nice complement to the kick-off as his story time is a one of a kind audience participation that involves face paintings that help illustrate the stories he tells.
This year’s program also offers a variety of prizes, including an iPad Mini, Beats Headphones and several nice gift cards.
The Sloatsburg Library joins some 1,100 other libraries throughout New York State Friday when it kicks the summer reading initiative that encourages kids to explore their local libraries.
