Suffern Sings Sondheim

Posted on 14 December 2011 by Admin

Suffern High School students will entertain a bloody mess for the spring musical, due on stage at the end of March 2012. Set to perform Stephen Sondheim’s classic Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the large cast should provide a fun evening of theater. Auditions were finished last week and the final cast is complete, with David Stedge set to play the Demon Barber Sweeney Todd and Julia Castle playing Mrs. Lovett. A nice twist in casting has Daniela Feingold taking on the role of young Tobias Ragg, traditionally a male role. Benjamin Stevens and Victoria Trifiletti are cast as star-crossed lovers Anthony and Johanna.

Sloatsburg students include Dunahay Pereyra, who landed a featured dancer role and Liz Markelova, who will be part of the ensemble.

A musical thriller set in 19th century London, the story revolves around a murderous barber set on vengeance. He gets plenty of help and cover from pie shop keeper Mrs. Lovett. Let’s just say — don’t eat the meat pies. Since the play is Sondheim, it includes intricate dramatic action, humor, great ballads, and a lot of difficult singing.

The cast includes 10 lead roles, with a complete second lead cast, 14 featured dancers, and a big ensemble. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin January 3, 2012 at Suffern High School. The show is directed by Ms. Christina DeFeo, with music and technical direction by Daniel McCarter. Vocal director will be Ms. Meyer, with choreography done by Ms. Salerno. Costume production will be handled by Tracy Sheridan and Mrs. Kinsley. The play is produced by Jessica Minick and Kathy Farrow.

Public performances of Sweeney Todd are scheduled to begin Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at Suffern High School and run through Saturday, March 24. Saturday will include a 1 p.m. matinee show, headlined by the second cast, as well as a regular 7 p.m. show. Tickets sell for $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
