Safe Choice Security only ranked 29 communities out of some 500, and based its findings on violent and property crimes per capita, and conducts state crime rankings throughout most states in the U.S. Stony Point was the only other Rockland County community on the list and came in at number 11. Woodbury in Orange County came in at 20 on the list.

“This ranking is a true testament to the men and women of the Suffern Police Department who diligently perform their duties day in and day out,” said Police Chief Clarke Osborn.

Suffern Mayor Trish Abato stated that “public safety is our number one priority in Suffern and we are very proud that we have achieved this ranking.”

With a population of 11,000 residents, Suffern was listed with .28 violent crimes and 5.41 property crimes per 1,000 people, which clocked in on the Safe Choice crime index of 91 — which makes Suffern safer than 91% of U.S. cities, according to the 2012 FCI Crime Statistics Report that Safe Choice used as the basis of its safe community analysis.
