Suffern High School athletes and scholars lined the walls in the halls and auditorium as Ramapo Central recognized some of its high achieving students. There was lots of applause and smiles as a round of congratulations sounded out for the achievements of the Suffern Yearbook Staff, National Merit Scholars, the SHS wrestling team, and girls indoor track team.

The Suffern wrestling team had an emotional season, losing longtime coach and guidance counselor Michael “Mickey” DeSimone, who died suddenly in December. The popular and influential figure proved inspirational to the Suffern wrestling team, which went on to win the state’s Section 1 Division Championship team title in February while Coach Chris Matteotti won Section 1 Coach of the Year.

Standout girls track star, senior Imani Solan, capped off a super year by being acknowledged as a National Merit Scholar, winning a silver medal in the naitonal 1,600 sprint relay and placing 4th nationally in the 200 meters. Solan will head off to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in the fall and was voted The Journal News Rockland Scholar/Athlete in February and holds the Rockland County record in the 200m — she’s also a two-time state champion and three-time All-American.

The crowded recognition ceremony was a very public reminder of the high-achieving efforts of Suffern High School students and districtwide achievement of Ramapo Central Schools.
