Suffern Girls XC Three Peats And Yearbook Receives Honors

Saturday’s blustery weather was just right for running as the Suffern Girls Cross Country team won its third straight Class AA Sectionals in Wappingers Falls, NY.

But longtime coach Jeff Dempsey was all about execution and the upcoming state meet, rather than bask in the glory of the team’s Sectional three-peat.

“Team-wise they ran well,” coach Dempsey said, in reporter Brian Heyman’s excellent LoHud coverage. “The compression was good,” said Dempsey about the girls’ bunched finish, with sophomore Rachel Ludwikowski finishing third, a hair in front of teammate and seventh-grade phenom Mary Hennelly — who placed fourth.

“The most important thing was get on the bus for next week,” Coach Dempsey said in LoHud, eyes on the prize. “We wanted to advance and get through. That was the goal.”

Ludwikowski just won the her first Rockland County Cross Country championship in late October, running the 3-mile course at Bear Mountain in a personal best 17:48 — again, according to LoHud’s Brian Heyman.

The girl Mounties repeated as county champions. Ludwikoski said she could feel Hennelly pushing her at Sectionals: “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I need to beat her,’ ” Ludwikowski said. “I want her to beat me because I want her to be good, but obviously I do it for myself. But I do love her. She’s one of my best friends. We’re definitely very competitive.”
