Suffern Central Schools Budget Vote and Board of Elections

Posted on 09 May 2018 by Editor

Suffern Central School District President Theresa DiFalco may soon become the longest serving veteran of the school board. First elected in 2012, DiFalco joined a board in transition, moving from a period of expansive local school growth (brought on partly by big bouncing property values) to the current years of budget management and the promotion of real district achievement and excellence.

With the Tuesday, May 15 school board and budget vote, the Suffern Central School District will see two longtime board members step aside — Clarke Osborn (2004-2018) and Teresa Monahan (2005-2018). Osborn and Monahan have each demonstrated support from their constituencies throughout their tenures while playing roles in helping to transition the school board and direction of the district.

Real change management started with the hiring in 2010 of current Superintendent Dr. Douglas Adams, who helped the board of education clarify the district educational mission, re-calibrate and tighten fiscal practices while investing in schools and promoting a district wide digital presence — all while also continuing to promote student achievement in the classroom and through clubs, activities and sports.

The Tuesday, May 15, SCSD budget vote and board of elections vote has will see at least two new faces join the Board of Education dais, with four people vying for three seats.

Suffern Central School District is probably as competitive an educational environment as one might find for a relatively small school district. Parents certainly receive a return on their tax investmen. Classrooms percolate with students who are provided every opportunity to achieve, led by engaged and energized teachers.

The downside to the high community investment in public schools is the annual tax bill to home owners. Even so, Suffern Central is one of the important planets in our singular community solar system … a star that can brighten everything.

Board of Education Candidates
Three Suffern Central Board of Education seats are available in the Tuesday, May 15 vote. Four candidates are running for the three seats, including current BOE President Theresa DiFalco, and newcomers Melissa Reimer, Angus MacKenzie, and Donald Cairns.

Registered voters in the Suffern Central School District go to the polls on Tuesday, May 15, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. to vote on the 2018-2019 district budget and two candidates for the School Board.
