The Sloatsburg UMC Food Pantry is heading into the high season, where holiday giving is essential for many local families to make ends meet.
Rockland Community Foundation President Pat Byrne recently said that “statistics on hunger in a county such as Rockland are staggering.” The foundation supports food pantries across the county.
Sloatsburg Food Pantry Director Susan Meyers was on hand in mid-October to receive an award and matching grant from the foundation, one of ten awarded annually to Rockland food pantries. The Rockland Community Foundation partnered with Inserra Supermarkets to provide matching grant gift dollars that were awarded at the Foundation’s Board meeting on October 16.
Sloatsburg’s Food Pantry, which serves approximately 130 members twice a month within the Ramapo Central and Tuxedo Union Free school districts, was in very good company.
Other winners included Catholic Community Services of Rockland, Head Start of Rockland, Martin Luther KIng Multi-Purpose Center, Meals on Wheels, People to People, Rockland Independent Living Center, Rockland Interfaith Breakfast Center, TOUCH (Together Our Unity Can Heal), and West Street Child Care Learning Center.
RCF cited statistics that suggest a 46% increase in the number of Rocklanders who have applied for supplemental food assistance programs over the past two years.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the Sloatsburg Food Pantry will be entering its food drive high season. Kudos go out to Susan Meyers and all those throughout the community who continue to support the local effort.
