It might be a slow shuffle in slippers but Sloatsburg is inching into the internet age. For the local digerati, the village just hooked up the Municipal Building and Municipal Pool with wifi hotspots.
“It’s the little things that you can do to make it nicer to live here and/or benefit the residents,” said Sloatsburg Village Trustee Peter Akey, who as trustee oversees Municipal Pool operations. “Last year I noticed that everytime I turned around, somebody was on their phone or on their laptop.”
Akey took note and worked this winter with village cable provider Optimum Online to install two wireless routers — one at the Municipal Building and one at the pool. The signals will provide just enough juice to cover wifi hotspots at each location, with the pool’s signal tapering off around the fence perimeter.
The hotspots will work via the village’s Optimum account and will require a login and password, which is usually captured by a person’s phone or computer for future use. People with their own Optimum accounts can also use their personal account information to access the hotspots.
“We’ll get that information out to the people when they sign up for the pool and we’ll post the information at the village hall,” said Akey, who said that the login data might change seasonally.
“Installing hotspots makes people feel that their tax dollars are working for them,” Akey said. Currently, Sloatsburg resident family pool memberships cost $300.
Akey said that he’s also working on getting a propane grill installed at the pool, but that the effort requires a bit more procedural red tape. Pool members are currently permitted to use small propane hibachi-sized grills at the pool.
“The beauty,” said Akey about the new pool wifi setup, “is you’ll be saving on your data because you can use the wifi while you’re at the pool as opposed to minutes.”
The new wifi hub is also an important upgrade to the Municipal Building as it provides assistance to people attending court who might need to access information. Other village locations that may be wired up in the future include the Sloatsburg Senior Center and Community Fields — which would need to be upgraded to include internet access.
So, now residents can kick back poolside this summer and stream the latest zombie action or catch up on Downton Abbey or just surf online all day.
