Another section of Sloatsburg sewer work is set to get underway as the Western Ramapo Sewer Extension Project rolls through the Village.
Rockland County Sewer District No. 1 will host a public informational meeting for Sloatsburg residents on Tuesday, February 2, at 7 p.m. at the Sloatsburg Municipal Building Fire Hall. The meeting will focus on the upcoming district sewer contract that includes Overlook Drive, Eagle Valley Road, Johnsontown Road, Hamilton Avenue, St. Joan Place, and grinder pumps.
The Village of Sloatsburg is represented on the Board of Sewer Commissioners by Village Trustee Daniel O’Leary. The commission includes representatives from Hillburn and Sloatsburg as well as the Towns of Ramapo and Orangetown.
Dan O’Leary recently reported to the Sloatsburg Village Board that Board of Commissioner Chair Chirstopher St. Lawrence has again indicated his openness to discussions with the Town of Tuxedo and Orange County regarding Tuxedo connecting to the Western Ramapo extension.
With Route 17 currently in disrepair from sewer construction, O’Leary said that Sloatsburg’s Main Street will likely be paved in the spring.
Both Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Town of Ramapo Supervisor have indicated policy that supports municipalities to share and/or merge duplicate services to seek out budget savings. Ed Day is an advocate of merged services, and the Town of Ramapo has grown through swallowing up surrounding village municipal services.
The proposed Tuxedo Farms housing development is currently building out roads and other infrastructure in Tuxedo, preparing for the first phase of it’s planned project to build 1,195 units on some 1,200 acres in the southern part of the town adjacent to Sloatsburg.
Tuxedo Farms also broke ground in September of 2015 on a new wastewater treatment facility in Tuxedo that is scheduled to serve the development with a modern plant that can produce clean effluent or be reclaimed for urban irrigation. According to the company, the plant should be active by the end of 2016.
Any sewer services provided to a neighboring county or outside the scope of the Sewer District’s charted authorization would involved the County Legislature and a probable change of county law — a rocky road to waste treatment mana indeed.
lant (WWTP) for Tuxedo Farms and the Tuxedo Hamlet District, known locally as the East Village. The entity under discussion would be called the Tuxedo Sewage-Works Corp.
