The Sloatsburg Public Library and Village of Sloatsburg Department of Public Works partnered on a program this summer to beautify the village, one garbage can at a time.

Working with the Keep Rockland Beautiful Artful Receptacles program, DPW Supervisor Mike DeMartino recently picked up six repurposed steel drum trash cans from the Rockland agency for use in Sloatsburg. DeMartino delivered the new garage cans to the Sloatsburg Public Library, which developed a special summer kids program around the project of colorfully painting them.

The Library recently had a painting session on Thursday afternoon, July 21, with another scheduled for August 4.

When completed, the DPW will distribute the cans around the village at such places as the Community Fields, bus stop and the Community Pool.

KRB featured a spring countywide can painting contest that included participation by the Clarkstown Highway Department, Orangetown Highway Department, local artists Shirley Christie and Star Kay White, and kids from all over. Cans were painted and varnished to withstand exposure to weather, then placed around the county for public use.
