There’s no real picture here of the Suffern Marching Band rising up from the street as it crossed over the Ramapo River bridge on Seven Lakes Drives.
The drums hammered in syncopation Saturday evening, with band members stepping down Seven Lakes Drive as they led the parade to its final destination at Sloatsburg Elementary School.
The band noticeably relaxed upon finally arriving at the school’s front lawn and green — members then danced a shimmy and shake celebration, breaking into a groovy number to greet the costumed crowd.
There’s also no photograph of Joe Hardiman, past Sloatsburg Fire Department president and current member of the department’s Board of Governors, as he parked the big Rescue rig (the department’s “toolbox on wheels”) climbed out, remote control in hand, and pointing it up, raised a bank of lights and communication tower from the truck’s roof. Hardiman’s profile blended momentarily with the far chiseled Rockland cliffs.
Sloatsburg Elementary School Prinicipal Joe Lloyd is a natural with microphone in hand. He called out winning costumes Saturday, laughing at a few ongoing stage antics (and at himself), and kept close to the script, moving things along as familiar Village faces and residents took part in a seasonal event some 30 years old.
Italian Isis, a pickup truck full of assorted characters, won this year’s award for best something, perhaps for Best Wordplay and Local Presentation of Overseas Jihadist Tsuris.
In all, Sloatsburgers showed up again for this year’s annual Village Halloween ramble. People looked around, searching out family and friends, some taking a moment to relax and feel a bit giddy at the seasonal celebration — a perfect time to people watch as a night chill descended.
Don’t forget to turn clocks back on Sunday, November 1, Day of the Dead, also known as All Saints Day, all part of the Hallowmas season that includes All Hallow’s Eve and All Soul’s Day.
