Tuesday promises to be Sloatsburg student day as two annual events take place in the Village.
In the morning, Sloatsburg Elementary School students will explore village history during the annual 4th grade historical tour that shows off local landmarks and puts the Sloat in the burg. Students will get up close histories of the Sloatsburg United Methodist Chapel, Sloat House & Innto, the Sloats Dam, Brown’s Gate, and the Jacob Sloat House.
The Sloatsburg Ramapo Cemetary, which dates back some 200 years, will be another highlight for the kids’ historical tour. The annual tour is part of a whole day given over to local history by Sloatsburg Elementary School, where 4th graders are immersed in local lore and actions that helped define Sloatsburg.
Students take a bus tour around Sloatsburg, followed by a Visitors Day where community members, such as Mayor Carl Wright and Suffern, Town of Ramapo and Rockland County Historian Craig Long, discuss the various thread of local history that contributed to the community of Sloatsburg.
Sloatsburg Celebrates Graduating Suffern Seniors
Tuesday evening, starting at 7:10 p.m., the Sloatsburg Village Board will meet and honor graduating Sloatsburg seniors from Suffern High School and surrounding schools.
A Sloatsburg tradition, the Graduating Seniors send-off is one of the most well-attended Village Board meetings, drawing a number of familiar faces, including Ramapo Central Superintendent Dr. Douglas Adams and other Board of Education members, as well as former longtime Sloatsburg Principal Ron Anagnostis — this senior class is one of the last cohorts that experienced Anagnostis as Principal at Sloatsburg Elementary School throughout their entire term.
Anagnostis, known by most as Mr. A, will review some of those recently forgotten but quickly recalled SES traditions.
The evening will include several acknowledgements and honors for students and others of accomplishment from the small Sloatsburg community, whose students continually excel at Suffern in both sports and academics.
There will be a musical portion to the program and refreshments served. For additional information, call the Sloatsburg Village Hall at 845/753-2001.
