The dark, heavy skies have apparently rained and moved on, leaving sunny blue for the rest of the Memorial Day weekend.
The Village of Sloatsburg will be out celebrating not only the holiday but the village’s 85th birthday, as the village has joined with St. Joan of Arc Church to close out this year’s carnival with a bang. St. Joan and Sloatsburg have partnered to put on a planned good old fashioned fireworks display at the Sloatsburg Community Fields. Fireworks are planned for 9 p.m.
The St. Joan of Arc Carnival is free and runs until 10 p.m. Sunday, May 25.
Some residents will remember the big birthday bash Sloatsburg threw for its 75th Diamond Jubilee, complete with village party at St. Mary’s Villa and 50 page special booklet.
Monday morning will be busy for the Suffern High School Marching Band as it readies to again lead the villages of Hillburn, Sloatsburg and Suffern Memorial Day Parades. Sloatsburg will welcome special parade guest Rockland County Thomas P. Zugibe. The Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 will also lead the parade which is scheduled to make its way from Memorial Park at Village Hall at 10 a.m. and move along Rt. 17 south through the village and around Eagle Valley Road to the Sloatsburg Cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial in memory of the men and woman who died while serving in the military.
Hillburn’s parade takes place at 9 a.m. while the Suffern Marching Band leads the residents of Suffern at 11 a.m. The Suffern parade route begins at the corner of Orange and Lafayette avenues and continues to Soldier’s Monument at the intersection of Lafayette and Washington.
Tuxedo will celebrate with a Memorial Day parade beginning at 11 a.m. at the George F. Baker High School. The parade will include the Tuxedo American Legion Post No. 293 Color Guard. Col. Laurie Barone will be parade Marshall. The parade will make its way north on Rt. 17 for a placing of wreaths at the War Memorial and end with a gun salute and taps at St. Mary’s Church Yard.
