In mid April, many people across Rockland County joined together as part of a county-wide Great American Cleanup campaign Earth Day celebration — which was organized locally by Keep Rockland Beautiful. Sloatsburg resident Carin Shapiro organized a successful local tie-in with the county effort.
Spurred on by her daughter Ilyssa, who wanted to join in the effort, Shapiro organized a cleanup at the Sloatsburg Community Fields that saw some 30 people show up to lend a hand.
“We had a great clean up,” Shapiro said, who added that volunteer worked for nearly three hours at the Community Fields and surrounding area, including a Girl Scouts troop.
Items removed: three tire, a large metal drum, a cooler, bottles, cigarettes butts, metal debris, three construction cones.
Keep Rockland Beautiful supplied the Sloatsburg participants with t-shirts, garbage bags and garbage grabbers, and other supplies for the event.
Already planning for another event next year, Shapiro plans to put together a committee to plan an event.
“Next year, we hope for a bigger event and we hope to send volunteers to other sites within the village,” Shapiro said.
