Saturday Is A Village Sale Day

Posted on 15 May 2013 by Editor

Get ready for a village wide rummage sale this Saturday. The Sloatsburg Scholarship Fund has put together a “town wide” garage sale that will involve some 30 and counting area families throughout Sloatsburg this Saturday, May 18. Each garage sale participant will be included in a special event directory that will be available the day of the event at Hayward’s Deli and Sterlington Station.

The directory will come complete with participating location maps and special items available (the directories will be in store at approximately 8:45 a.m.).

The daylong village wide sale runs from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m.

Annmarie McAnany, president of the Sloatsburg Scholarship Fund, a local non-profit organization, said the town wide garage sale is a great community effort to let people know about the scholarship fund.

“This his has been a great opportunity to raise awareness for the fund — a lot of people didn’t even know we existed,” said McAnany, who recently sent out a SSF flier to all Sloatsburg residents that gave detailed information about the organization’s initiatives.

Originally organized as a committee by Village Trustee Pete Akey, who currently serves as village board liaison, the Scholarship Fund has taken over organizational and fundraising responsibility from the Village of Sloatsburg for a diverse group of student scholarships. Where before the village had been working directly with scholarship sponsors, the SSF has taken over the village’s role and now provides independent oversight.

“My goal is to add more scholarships,” McAnany said. “We want the garage sale to be an annual event where the community comes together for a big spring sale that benefits Sloatsburg students.”

Proceeds from the $15 directory registration fee go to the Sloatsburg Scholarship Fund, a local non-profit group that raises money for Sloatsburg student scholarships that range from graduating 5th graders at Sloatsburg Elementary School to Suffern High School seniors.

Sloatsburg high school scholarships will be awarded on Monday, June 3, at the Suffern High School Night of Excellence.

Elementary school awards will be awarded separately and are based on kids who cultivate and articulate an educational awareness with student winners selected by teachers and scholarship sponsors.

The Sloatsburg Scholarship Fund seeks to help offset the many costs encountered by students when first getting off to college.

McAnany also said that people participating in the garage sale, and other residents, should call the Vietnam Veterans of America to schedule a pickup as the group regularly picks up on Mondays.

“The Sloatsburg garage sale is actually promoting veterans and the children at the same time,” McAnany said.

So, make sure you have a pocket full of money when you wander the village on Saturday.
