The end is finally in sight for the Rockland County Executive candidates’ long winding race. After nearly 20 years, the county will say a collective hello to a new leader Tuesday evening.

Tuesday, November 5 is Election Day. Sloatsburgers and those in Poll Districts 4, 15, 39, & 48 cast ballots at the Sloatsburg Municipal Building. Polling opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. Ramapo Central Schools are closed on Election Day.

Republican and Preserve Rockland candidate Ed Day threw his hat into the county executive race  in mid-November 2012 just after current County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef announced he would leave office after his term ended. Democrat, Working Families and Independent candidate David Fried formally announced his intentions on December 2, 2012, with the endorsement of Congresswoman Nita Lowey (NY-17). Thomas Sullivan will represent the Conservative line.

It’s been a long road for both candidates, with all the endorsements to be gotten now settled. The up at 5 a.m. days of campaigning at train stops, copious meet-and-greet dinners and late night fundraisers are finished. Now, voters decide.

Both candidates have honed their messages and deserve applause for addressing real issues that face the county, including the fiscal mess and Rockland’s water future.

brightertomorrowFinal arguments for both candidates are succinctly summarized in Nyack News & Views, with Day saying Rockland County is “simply put, at a true crisis point.” Day says he has the budgetary and executive experience in both the public and private sectors to lead the county.

ChangeaheadFried takes the come together approach, saying that animosity and bluster are toxic to the electoral landscape: “I want us to put aside our differences and move our community forward, regardless of our political affiliation or ideology.”
