Get a few coins on the ready this weekend as the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual roadside fund drive.
Many locals are familiar with the drive which sees volunteer firefighters collecting coins, dollars and funds from passing cars, mostly at the busy center village stop light at Rt. 17 and Eagle Valley Road at the U.S. Post Office in Sloatsburg, NY.
Hours for the SFD Fund Drive are roughly 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with collected funds put towards department uniforms, after-drill refreshments and food, as well as membership fees for various firematic fees, according to Sloatsburg Fire Department spokesman and Second Assistant Chief Matthew Stritmater.
Stritmater said the road drive goes a long way in covering the fire department’s miscellaneous expenses. The SFD Fund Drive on Rt. 17 has been held for some 30 years now.
In the past, the SFD Fund Drive helped pay for the department’s state-of-the-art Red Alert dispatch system which includes a partial GPS system that allows the department to track call locations throughout the village. Additionally, Red Alert helps the department to help track local fire hydrants.
The SFD tracks all incoming calls and responses through the Red Alert system which are displayed on the department’s website, Sloatsburgfire.org.
Stritmater, who manages the SFD’s website, said that the department has been progressively upgrading and enhancing the Red Alert system.
So, have a few loose coins or bills at the ready this weekend to help out with a good local cause.
