The last few years truly were like Groundhog Day. A couple of years ago there was that late October snow storm that cancelled the Sloatsburg Halloween Parade. And last year was the tropical winds of Sandy, which wound up stronger and stronger to become a super storm before slamming into New Jersey and New York.
Last year on this day Sloatsburg was wind whipped but relatively unscathed. Many experienced power outages as Orange & Rockland assembled emergency work crews to get a large swath of its customers back online. Throughout Sloatsburg, downed trees took out many single power lines, which in turn left whole areas of a neighborhood without power — for days.
The library once again, as it does, acted as a community resource, with residents stopping in to juice up cell phones and computers.
The Sloatsburg Department of Public Works was out in force cleaning up debris.
Then the gas lines started at the Super Seven and for a week, Rt. 17 in the village center hosted a snaking line of cars waiting for gas.
Following is a review of several articles of Sloatsburg after Sandy.
Gas Lines At The Super Seven — Remember the fight that broke out at the Super Seven as cars from all across Rockland, and even New Jersey, were on the hunt for gas.
Sloatsburg Ambulance Corp Rides To The Rescue — The folks at the Sloatsburg Volunteer Ambulance Corp started a community drive that collected all sorts of items for Sandy victims. And then drove miles to deliver the goods.
