The outcry from local residents over placement of a recent parolee was apparently heard loud and clear. The Rockland County Times reported Tuesday morning, December 16, that a level 2 sex offender slated to start life after prison in a Sloatsburg neighborhood filled with children is “expected to be removed today and placed in a holding facility” while another location is found for him.
RCT reported that the offender was scheduled to move in with his brother in Sloatsburg, but agencies charged with arranging the placement “determined the living conditions of Bott’s home to be unacceptable. Bott is living with his brother, whom authorities may have determined to be incompetent and whose house is filthy and lacks basic services.”
Parole officers assigned to the offender reportedly investigated the release house and rejected the residence, with Bott apparently moving entirely out of county as of Tuesday.
The offender served approximately 13-14 years in prison for the violent sexual assault of a minor and was assigned to live in Sloatsburg very near an area that included a popular children’s playground, park, school bus stops, and any number of young children.
Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright expressed deep concern over the placement and many residents expressed outraged. Wright said that the village learned of the placement this past Friday when concerned parents called in and emailed the village offices, expressing shock at the news, which was circulating rapidly through local social media. The Mayor likened the placement of a violent sex offender in the neighborhood in question to that of “a recovering alcoholic being given an apartment at a brewery.”
Update: The scheduled a meeting at the Municipal Building on Wednesday, December 17, at 7 p.m. with Rockland County Sheriff’s Office and the Ramapo Police Department has been cancelled.
