Surprised parents ran into a morning mess of construction at Sloatsburg Elementary School Thursday. Crews from Carbro construction were in the road and in the way, with heavy equipment loudly competing with local traffic as parents tried to make their regular morning run to drop off students.
Parents dropping children off at Sloatsburg Elementary School should use Allen Lane — and expect some congestion and delays.
Sewer work continues in Sloatsburg along 2nd Street at Fairchild. Carbro is the subcontractor hired by as the Rockland County Sewer District 1 to continue the next phase of the project, which ran into other problems recently when Carbro broke a couple of water mains.
“The Village is, of course, concerned,” said Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright at Tuesday night’s Board of Trustees meeting regarding the two water main breaks, most recently along Johnsontown Road at Seven Lakes Drive. The break occurred during a search for the bypass valve for the water main.
There was a scheduled meeting between United Water, the Sewer District and Carbro on Wednesday to go over the current project and re-evaluate maps and water lines.
Mayor Wright said that there will continue to be a great deal of inconvenience with the sewer construction but that the rewards will ultimately far outweigh construction problems.
“I spent a lot of time on the phone, talking to a lot of irate residents,” said Wright about complaints related to the water breaks, which left many without water for several hours. Wright said both United Water and the Rockland Sewer District were being pro-active about the village’s concerns. The mayor said that United Water would have an inspector onsite most of the time to help with any project issues.
An on-site Carbro project manager refused comment about the construction project, even refusing to identify the name of his company. A call to Sloatsburg Elementary School Principal Eric Baird about the school’s effort to alert parents went unanswered.
The section of 2nd Street at Fairchild is scheduled to be finished either Friday or Monday. Parents dropping children off at Sloatsburg Elementary School should use Allen Lane — and expect a bit of congestion. The sewer work will take a turn onto Fairfield but the narrow streets and big equipment will create some traffic inconveniences until the project is complete.
The elementary school phase of the sewer project involves work along 2nd and Fairchild Streets and Washington Avenue.
The there will be work along Grant Street and Waldron Terrace, which, upon completion, the next Sloatsburg area targeted for sewer construction will be Pine Grove Lakes. Any remaining outlying areas, which include the Ballard and Academy neighborhood, Liberty Rock, Upper 17, and Sebastian Court, will follow.
Like an egg, the streets are only cracked open once to drop down sewer lines. And then it’s all done. Patience.
