January is a busy month around Sloatsburg, with school activities picking up and the Sloatsburg Library’s winter schedule kicking in. What follows is a brief roundup of activities in and around Sloatsburg for the month.
- January 4-5: Suffern Middle School Arts/Music Night features the annual Winter Concert for Band, Orchestra and Chorus for grades 6- 8. The Winter Concert and student art display take place both January 4 and 5 @ 7 p.m.
- January 5: Garden Club meets @ 7 p.m. at the Sloatsburg Public Library. It’s never too early to plan your planting. The Garden Club will meet the first Thursday of every month.
- January 8: United Methodist Church of Sloatsburg Parsonage Open House after Sunday services.
- January 10, 12: Suffern Middle School Arts/Music night continues at Suffern Middle @ 7 p.m. Final nights for the middle school Winter Concert and student art display.
- January 17: Energy Savings Workshop at the Sloatsburg Library. Get your home winter ready in winter shape. register in advance by calling the Sloatsburg Library. An informative energy workshop includes access to a free energy audit through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). A home audit can help you save $700 on your energy bills.
- January 18: Sloatsburg Elementary School Grades 3 & 4 Winter Concert @ 9:30 a.m. at Sloatsburg Elementary. Be prepared for a lot of ohhs and ahhs as young students take the stage.
- January 18: Suffern High School Winter Concert @ 7 p.m. at Suffern High School. The high school Winter Concert includes a wealth of musical talent. Be prepared for singing, dancing and instrument playing.
- January 19: Grade 8 Parent Orientation at Suffern High School @ 7 p.m. Here comes those high school years for a whole other cohort of students and parents. Orientation for parents for incoming freshman students. Be prepared.
- January 22-29: Saint Joan of Arc Church will hold a weeklong food drive as part of the Archdiocesan Food Campaign. A food box will be available in the entrance to the church hall for non-perishable food donations during the week.
- January 24: Songwriting Workshop at the Sloatsburg Library @ 4:30 p.m. Geared toward kids, Alice Leon, a Hudson Valley based singer and songwriter, will introduce students to songwriting. The workshop involves students creating their own original song in Mp3 format to bring home. Grades k-2nd.
- Janaury 26: Ramapo Central School District Grade 5 Concert at Suffern High School @ 7 p.m. Choral groups and musicians from all the districts elementary schools gather to show their stuff at this annual winter concert.
- January 30: Author Reading at Sloatsburg Public Library @ 4:30 p.m. Tuxedo writer Lucy Bermingham will read from recent work and discuss how she writes her stories.
