As the school year winds down, students are stepping up for awards and inductions.
The Suffern High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society held its awards ceremony last week, inducting almost 40 new members into the honor society — which, next to the National Honor Society itself, is the only Suffern High School honor society.
So, come cap and gown day, only students who are members of either organization will be wearing tassels from their graduation caps. That’s one way to spot the scholars. The National Honor Society tassel is gold, while the National Arts Honor society tassel is a rainbow of colors.
Some 20 graduating Suffern seniors belonged to the NAHS this past year. The ceremony involved new society members being inducted, a review of the year’s activities and outgoing officers naming their replacements.
The NAHS was active throughout the year, painting the windows of the Bagel Train in Suffern to match the spirit of passing seasons and holidays, casting plaster body sculptures in the the school library and holding various fundraisers. The society also sponsored Art Week at the school to encourage and involve other students in aqrt and art projects.
The stated purpose of the NAHS is to inspirte and recognize students who show promise and ability in the arts.
NAHS members also participating in Monday’s Evening of Excellence that saw approximately $100,000 in scholarships awarded to Suffern students.
