The monthly live Slaughter Stand-Up comedy celebration rolls into Characters Friday night with a diverse group of comics that should keep the upstairs room crackling and tense. The evening’s host will be Paul Byrne with “the first lady of Slaughter Stand-Up” Stephanie Vanacore set to headline the night.
Characters Restaurant in Sloatsburg is the home base of the Slaughter comedy collective that has become a Lower Hudson Valley comedy powerhouse.
“Over the last two years we’ve been very fortunate to have great support in the local community as well as the opportunity to work with such great talent,” said Dave Saitzyk about the recent Slaughter run of well-attended Characters shows.
Started by the trio of comedians Eric Albert, Dave Saitzyk, Dan DiMarino, the group regularly produces a monthly live comedy show at Character’s cozy upstairs dining room that has become a hot gig for comedians in the LoHud area. Friday, May 30, will feature special guests Jonathan Swift, owner of the comedy club The Pulpit, Jorden Fried and Mike Mone — as well as headliner Vanacore and host Byrne.
The room at Characters is always electric during the live comedy show as each comedian feeds off the crowd response and compete with one another.
Doors to the upstairs venue open at 8:30 p.m. with the live show starting at 9 p.m. The evening costs $5 bucks, and also involves a two drink minimum or food item. If you haven’t dropped in on a live comedy show lately, get over to Characters Bar and Restaurant for a good laugh.
June’s Summer Showdown Draws 64 Comics
Saitzyk is also excitied about the upcoming June Slaughter Stand-Up comedy competition at Characters called Summer Showdown. The Showdown has drawn stiff competition from near and far and will feature 64 comics and during a week of fast-talking entertainment fireworks. The bottom line of the week-long round robin of comic competition in front of a live Characters crowd is make me laugh or leave the stage.
The event is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday June 16 and 17, with winners voted on (and losers voted off) by the crowd and guest judges — those who past the crowd test move on to the final rounds Thursday and Friday, June 19 and 20.
Saitzyk said that the quality of comedians entering the competition is due to the popularity of the monthly comedy shows at Characters and the talent the shows have attracted — plus the quality of the venue.
The last comedian standing on at the Summer Showdown competition’s final night wins a future headlining gig at a Characters comedy night.
