All eyes were on Ramapo Central Assistant Superintendent for Business Kelly Seibert as he ran through school district budget facts and figures, projecting them on a big screen for the crowded room to see. It was not a pretty picture for a school district that has experienced personnel and program growth and stability over the last few years.
President of the Ramapo Teachers Association John Canty stepped up to the podium Tuesday night and said, “I think it’s time to bust the cap,” referring to the NY state cap on property tax increases.

Suffern Middle School students are using videoconferencing to learn about the ultimate act of bullying — genocide. In a project closely tied to the sixth-grade curriculum, Barbara Biddy and Jennifer Fruhling’s sixth-grade classes are taking part in the One Million Bones project, a social arts project promoted by NYC-based nongovernmental organization Global Nomads, Students Rebuild and CARE International to bring attention to the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia. The Sharks and Jets will sing and dance it out on stage this spring when Suffern High School presents West Side Story for its Spring Musical.
But first come auditions. The call has been sent out to aspiring performers for Spring Musical tryouts this Tuesday and Wednesday, December 11 and 12. Final call backs are scheduled for Friday, December 14.
West Side Story is fashioned after William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, with contemporary touches that involve gang rivalry, forbidden love and jumping dance numbers. A sort of bookmark in American theater that introduced kinetic dance numbers and Stephen Sondheim’s sophisticated lyrics, the show was created by a who’s-who of Broadway theater — with a book by Authur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and choreography by Jerome Robbins.
Kathy Muenz, who runs The Dance Loft in Suffern, will direct and choreograph this year’s musical. Musical and technical whiz Dan McCarter will once again take on those responsibilities, leading the music portion of the production. Allison Meyer will act as vocal director and Rich Murray will be charged with set design.
West Side Story is scheduled for performances this spring.

Suffern High School students kick off the drama season Thursday night at the school auditorium with Neil Simon’s farcical play Rumors.
Staged by Kathy Muenz, the play’s story involves a dinner party of friends who gather to celebrate their hosts’ 10-year wedding anniversary. But their host is locked away in an upstairs bedroom with an odd injury that causes the guests to create any number of stories to cover for their friend, the deputy mayor. What follows is an oddball evening full of mixups and one-liners, where the play’s central character is never seen but is the focus of attention. Everyone has something to hide. Continue Reading

For the past 30 years Greenwood Lake students have attended George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo, NY. The Greenwood Lake Board of Education decision to switch schools, if it stands, will certainly change Tuxedo. Continue Reading
