Harrison Bush has worn many hats during his years living in the Village of Sloatsburg … from a student at Suffern High School in the 1940s to WWII veteran awarded a Purple Heart and to elder of the Sloatsburg Historical Society to helping establish Harmony Hall as a landmark to serving as keeper of local lore and history as Village Historian. Welcome the new owners of Sloatsburg Wine, located in the village center shopping mall. Sisters Olga Lukashyk and Iryna Moskalyk have taken on the wine and spirit store and hope you help make the establishment a great success.
There’s more going on at Sloatsburg Wine than you might think. The store tucked next to Hayward’s Deli on the Route 17 byway through Sloatsburg, NY, is a familiar crossroads for locals.
Now Suffern resident Olga Lukashyk, along with family, including sister Iryna Moskalyk, have taken on the wine and liquor store. Iryna mentioned the interesting changes in Sloatsburg as a catalyst to talk Keith Reardon into selling the store. The old Jessie’s Bagels store on Route 17 in north Sloatsburg, NY, was recently transformed into a perfect period piece — a 1970s Sunoco station. The setup was part of the filming for Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” which has been shooting locally, including at Tuxedo’s Orange Top Diner and along Lafayette Avenue in Suffern.
Jimmy Hoffa’s fated final ride is an American legend.
The former International Brotherhood of Teamsters leader reportedly headed off to a local Detroit restaurant to meet two purported mobsters in the summer of 1975 — never to be seen again. Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran claimed to know exactly what happened to Hoffa. In his version, Hoffa’s last ride was short and ended in blood. Sheeran by his own admission was a seasoned killer before he become muscle for the mob, claiming to be familiar with a series of sensational historical events. Continue Reading

A lot of sole work is about to take to the streets Saturday as the 13 day 170 mile Water Walk for Life begins on July 22 in Mahwah, NJ. The prayer walk is part of campaign to bring awareness to and advocate against the proposed Pilgrims Pipelines from a coalition of partners that includes the Coalition Against the Pilgrim Pipelines CAPP, the Ramapough Lenape Nation and Grafton Peace Pagoda. Stop over at Harmony Hall for an afternoon seasonal celebration of summer. The Friends of Harmony Hall and Town of Ramapo sponsor the Saturday, June 17, event — Music for the Summer Solstice. The event is free and open to the public and is set to include a nature walk around the Harmony Hall grounds and peek at the curator’s Blunt Mountain Mint plantings — mountain mint is native to the Highlands with a variety growing in the nearby Ramapo Mountains … there’s even a report of the Hoary Mountain Mint growing wild up on Torne. The Village of Sloatsburg Board of Trustees has recommended Option 2 “Road Diet” for the NYSDOT Complete Streets Project … a choice that promises high roadway safety and a bolder transformation of the Route 17 corridor through the Village.
