The Highlands Bluegrass Festival Lights Up Sloatsburg With Late Summer Music

The lawn in front of Harmony Hall in Sloatsburg filled with music fans during the 2017 Highlands Bluegrass Festival. The 9th annual Highlands Bluegrass Festival takes place at Harmony Hall on Sunday, September 9, from 1-6 p.m.

It all comes down to the weather. Talk to a Friend of Harmony Hall about the upcoming 9th annual Highlands Bluegrass Festival and you can almost see their eyes momentarily stray to the sky. A sign of the times — Sloatsburg poised to complete Village street sign replacement

A street sign replacement project that began nearly five years ago in Sloatsburg is now entering its fourth and final phase, with the end result that the village will have nearly all new street signs.

You might call it an anchor Village revitalization project. Nearly five years ago Village of Sloatsburg Trustee Peter Akey launched his street sign replacement project with the dual intent of beautifying the Village via new signage and replacing older small-lettered and, in some cases, rusting signs. Things going on Memorial Day Weekend

The  Memorial Day weekend comes fast and festive in these parts. From weekend pool openings to the local carnival and main street marches, life along Route 17 will be alive with activity.

The annual Sloatsburg Carnival continues this weekend during the afternoon and evening hours at the Community Fields with the entrance located at Route 17 and Eagle Valley Road. It’s a free event but wristbands of some sort run $25 which gets you the carnival package.

The united St. Joan of Arc Church and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Churches with a Sunday night fireworks finale Sloatsburg Carnival set for the Sloatsburg Community Fields on Sunday.

There are parades in Tuxedo, Sloatsburg and Suffern Monday morning that extend into afternoon community get togethers.

Tuxedo will have near all-day community events beginning with morning Memorial Day ceremonies, a parade and afternoon community day at the Tuxedo Park Library directly across from the fabulous Tuxedo Train Station.

While Suffern has a morning of activities, including the annual parade down Lafayette Street, a partnership between the Suffern Chamber of Commerce and village.

Suffern Central Schools Budget Vote and Board of Elections

Suffern Central School District President Theresa DiFalco may soon become the longest serving veteran of the school board. First elected in 2012, DiFalco joined a board in transition, moving from a period of expansive local school growth (brought on partly by big bouncing property values) to the current years of budget management and the promotion of real district achievement and excellence. Sloatsburg Community Gets Together to Cleanup the Village

Volunteers from around Sloatsburg pitched in late April back in 2016, one of the first Keep Rockland Beautiful Sloatsburg Cleanups. Sloatsburg resident Carin Shapiro organized a successful local tie-in with the county effort that focused on the Sloatsburg Community Fields. This year’s effort takes place Sunday, April 29, starting at noon at the Municipal Building.

Sloatsburg Complete Streets Informational Meeting Set for March to Unveil Revised Route 17 Roadway Plan

Residents got a prelude of the revised Route 17 Complete Streets plan through Sloatsburg during a recent February Village Board meeting. Whatever expectations are, the roadway equation appears simple enough. For Sloatsburgers to enjoy a modicum of main street and improved roadway safety that includes slower traffic through the village center, the community must expect some traffic backup during peak traffic hours.
