Tuxedo, NY resident Sue Scher, originally from Brooklyn, attended the Women’s March in NYC with old friends from her Camp Kinderland days, a camp in Tolland, MA founded in 1923 by Jewish activists as a retreat for children from the tenements of NYC.
Saturday morning in Sloatsburg started off foggy from unseasonable muggy weather, but a small group of area women were already on their way to Manhattan to merge with others traveling into the city from across the Hudson Valley, and beyond. The first thing people saw upon arriving in the city were others streaming in from subway stops and buses, and plenty of colorful signs on display.
The day in the city turned out to be one for the history books, as similar mass marches of men and women took place across the country. Continue Reading

The Tuxedo Hudson Company was recently awarded a $750,000 Mid-Hudson Economic Development Council grant for its proposed Tuxedo/Sloatsburg revitalization effort that includes demolishing the old Tuxedo Inn building and a complete renovation of the former IGA into office space and a restaurant.
Sometimes progress can appear in the smaller details. This holiday season Sloatsburg and Tuxedo have vibrant light displays along Route 17 going through the center of the communities. Tuxedo’s old IGA building (now undergoing a complete makeover) is especially decorated, all compliments of the Tuxedo Hudson Company. Continue Reading

Members of the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department greet Sloatsburg’s new 78′ Aerial Ladder Truck, which was delivered to the Village at the beginning of December 2016.
The sky was still lit up with colorful clouds on the recent Friday evening that Sloatsburg’s new 78′ Aerial Ladder Truck arrived in the village Municipal Lot. Word of mouth spread as members of the Sloatsburg Fire Department made their way over to Village Hall to take a look at the department’s first ever ladder truck.
The 78′ Ladder Truck, along with an on-order new rescue/pumper truck, will allow the department to meet nearly all of its firefighting needs – for now and into the future. Continue Reading

After Tropical Storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy created havoc for many Hudson Valley communities a few years back, Annmarie McAnany got the Sloatsburg Public Library busy preparing itself for future emergencies.
With the assistance of NY Senator David Carlucci’s office, the library secured grant funding for a new emergency generator that, after installation, will also qualify the library as an official community NYS emergency shelter. The effort to head off the 178 mile proposed Pilgrim Pipelines have galvanized New York and New Jersey communities both large and small. Pilgrim Holdings, LLC, a closely held company with institutional back for the pipeline project, is planning to use NYS Thruway right-of-way for 79% of the double pipeline construction. The rest of the land will run through parcels of private and other community property. Continue Reading

Gorden Wren’s partial plea for a “good drenching rain” to put out the recent Harriman State Park brush fires was answered by Mother Nature Tuesday.
Wren, Rockland County’s Fire Director, has directed the county’s combined efforts that, along with other NY State fire agencies, have worked to tamp down two Harriman Park fires that started Sunday, November 13 — one in the vicinity of Pine Meadow Lake and one near the Orange County line at Tom Jones Mountain. The annual Village of Sloatsburg Halloween Parade, led by the Suffern High School Marching Band, had a large turn out and closed out the month of October with a bang.
