Sloatsburg Celebrates Memorial Day

Posted on 26 May 2012 by Editor

Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright was careful to be as accurate as possible — Memorial Day celebrations have been going on in Sloatsburg in some shape or form since World War I. He wasn’t certain exactly when they started. But whether it was the community gathering at the old Fire Hall or later at the American Legion Hall, or now at the Sloatsburg Community Fields, the village has always honored its veterans. Posted on 09 May 2012 by Editor

Most days Hayward’s Deli & Market bustles early with customers stopping in for an on-the-run bagel and spot of coffee or bit of morning news. And then there’s the big lunch sandwiches for the hungry noon crowd, where the Hayward motto “meats to please you” hits home.

Our annual thank you to our loyal customers; stop by and have a FREE coffee, tea or hot chocolate — on us this Thursday. We thank you for your continued business! Ken & Lauren Hayward

Rockland Recycles Fun During Sunday’s Environmental Day

Posted on 04 May 2012 by Editor

Tucked away at the very end of Torne Valley Road, there’s a lot more than recycling going on at the low-slung Rockland County Solid Waste Mangement Authority buildings. Surrounded by geometrical shaped bio-solids composting near the hilltop plant, the center is the site where all county paper and plastic comes to be separated and processed in huge hanger-like warehouses. But those activities are only part of the authority’s activities. This Sunday, May 6, come rain or shine, the RCSWA team welcomes area residents to discover more about their efforts during the 3rd Annual Environmental Day: Living Green in Rockland Continue Reading

Posted on 23 April 2012 by Editor

The Sloatsburg Fire Department played host to the Rockland County Fire Chiefs’ Association’s Old-Timers Night dinner the last day of March. Leading up to the event, members of the fire department were busy readying the Fire Hall, cooking and cleaning, setting up tables and decorations in preparation for the the Chiefs’ Association’s 60th anniversary celebration. An Eye For Art

Posted on 13 April 2012 by Editor

Ken Linsner lives surrounded by Tibetan thangka and Samurai swords, Japanese paintings, and plenty of books — several libraries’ worth. It’s the life of the mind as lived in the world of art and every conceivable art object possible, from an older aunt’s long-held paintings to that silverware collection passed down through the generations to a rare Tibetan kapala — sacred sculpted skull. Nestled behind the Municipal Pool down in the Flats off Brook Street, sits Brook Street Park, a sleepy Sloatsburg treasure. Nakoma Brook runs quietly down from the hills and watershed above Sloatsburg, running by the pool, providing the playground its own ample elbow space and quiet. Continue Reading

Sights And Sounds Of The Season

Posted on 17 March 2012 by Editor

The mornings are dark now but the days are stretching longer. More light. Spring has sprung early this year, with temperatures going all wobbly. This coming week will see them range from the 70s down to the 40s and 50s. But then who cares Continue Reading

Weekend Ramapough Workshop

Posted on 24 February 2012 by Editor

Ramapo Mountain watershed issues and the story of the Ramapough-Lenape people are old familiars for many in these parts. But they hold interest and reflect a wider concern with governmental and industrial practices currently at work. Say fracking and safe drinking water. Continue Reading

October Snow Storm Tricks Sloatsburg

Posted on 03 November 2011 by Editor

Weird Halloween weather blew through Sloatsburg Thursday, October 27, dumping more than a foot of off-season snow on the village. Trees full of autumn yellow and green leaves bent from the burden, and the pop and snap of breaking branches could be heard throughout the night. By sunrise Friday, Sloatsburg was at a standstill. Many throughout Rockland County lost power, cable and even cell phone service. One of the hardest hit Sloatsburg neighborhoods was heavily-wooded Pine Grove Lakes. Continue Reading
