SHS Puts On Fall Play

Posted on 08 November 2012 by Editor

Suffern High School students kick off the drama season Thursday night at the school auditorium with Neil Simon’s farcical play Rumors.

Staged by Kathy Muenz, the play’s story involves a dinner party of friends who gather to celebrate their hosts’ 10-year wedding anniversary. But their host is locked away in an upstairs bedroom with an odd injury that causes the guests to create any number of stories to cover for their friend, the deputy mayor. What follows is an oddball evening full of mixups and one-liners, where the play’s central character is never seen but is the focus of attention. Everyone has something to hide. Continue Reading

Get Prepared For Super Storm Sandy

Posted on 28 October 2012 by Editor

As Yogi Berra once said, “It’s like deja-vu, all over again.”

With light winds already lifting leaves from trees, it’s time to really batten down the hatches. Sandy could deliver weather just like Irene did, but worse. When the hybrid super storm that is Sandy finally reaches these parts, it promises sustained big winds and floods of rain. Current predictions are that the weather will last for days, with forecasts calling Sandy a wide storm, reaching nearly 800 miles in its width and packing 75 mile per hour winds. Landfall for the storm is expected sometime Monday, with high winds and heavy rains leading the way beginning Sunday evening. Continue Reading

Sloatsburg Halloween Parade

Posted on 26 October 2012 by Editor

Saturday there’s only a slight chance of rain, maybe twenty percent, so get outside and enjoy. Remember this time last year? Trees with leaves still turning colors were bent and broken from a late October snow storm that forced the cancellation of the annual Halloween Parade. Come Tuesday, Sloatsburg may once again experience foul weather from Tropical Storm Sandy. So get out for some fun with friends and family and a late afternoon stroll though Sloatsburg. Local Murder Mystery Explored

Posted on 07 October 2012 by Editor

Back in Sloatsburg’s earlier days, before the NY Thruway sliced through and Pine Grove Lakes was built out, the village was more rural, especially in 1952. On October 25 of that year, Ramapo town clerk Robert Nugent and a friend drove off into the woods in an old jeep to get some hunting in. They never returned.

The murder of these two men remained a mystery for many years, until 1981, when a local man, John Youmans, was brought to trial. Youmans had originally been questioned about the shooting back in 1952. The police took his statement and he was released. Continue Reading

Find Something To Take Back Home

Posted on 29 September 2012 by Editor

Route 17 slices through the center of Sloatsburg, making it difficult to generate that leisurely village vibe. Sometimes the main street is empty and the central village all quiet. But most times the frenetic traffic speeds through, racing from light to light. Continue Reading
