Just Trying To Catch The Next Train Out

Posted on 09 May 2013 by Editor

There’s something about laid-back Sterlington Station in Sloatsburg that seems to attract action.

Thursday afternoon, three men crashed a car on the NY Thruway and then made their way to Sterlington Station, looking for directions. It was their good fortune to be helped by Tim McAleese, who can be found most days working the deli counter and register — as McAleese just casually goes about his business and tries to help anyone who walks through the door. Posted on 07 May 2013 by Editor

Last week Sloatsburg residents and businesses were checking power chords and wall outlets as the village experienced a sudden afternoon power surge.

And then just as businesses were booting back up, the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to multiple brush fires — several along the NY Thruway and one along Seven Lakes Drive. Continue Reading

Sunshine is shining and drawing the adventurous in droves out for some Harriman State Park recreation. So Sterling Station along Seven Lakes Drive picked a picture perfect day to put on a party.

Chrissy and TJ have put out the welcome to all comers today for a good old-fashioned pig roast, Sloatsburg style in the parking lot at Sterlington Station. 90lbs of pig will be cooked for the day’s activities. It costs just $30 for participants to get their fill of BBQ and other kitchen fare food. The price includes all the canned & draft beer you’d like to savor as well. The Sterlington Station fun starts now and goes through 7 p.m.

Happy hour prices will be in effect for all other drinks.

Sloatsburg’s own DJ Armstrong will throw down tunes and there’ll be an open mic. So get out and enjoy. Friends, sun, fresh pork, Sloatsburg. The works. Go on. Get.

Sterlington Station is located at 23 Seven Lakes Drive, Sloatsburg. The Saturday, May 4, Pig Roast costs $30 per person and participants pretty much get their fill of food and drink. For more information, call (845) 753-2662.

Scouts Celebrate Earth Day And Hike to Claudius Smith’s Den

Posted on 22 April 2013 by Editor

Earth Day began way back in 1970 with a near end of the world fervor. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring about pesticide use was just eight years old and industrial pollution was a very real and serious problem in the U.S.

Earth Day was inaugurated back when people would freely toss trash out car windows, no problem, sailing it down the street, littering roadways and highways. Paint sludge was dumped and buried in Ramapo’s own Torne Valley. The nascent environmental movement resulted in groundbreaking laws, including major revisions of the Clean Air Act in 1970 and Clean Water Act in 1972. Continue Reading

Board Of Education Celebrates Hockey Heroes

Posted on 04 April 2013 by Editor

Take the way back machine to the beginning of March. The Suffern Mounties hockey team were reigning state hockey champions and in the thick of another playoff run. Against rival Mamaroneck, Suffern mounted an epic comeback in the last seconds of the game to cap the team’s fourth consecutive Section 1 championship.

But then the Mountie magic tank went dry. The defending state champs got dethroned 3-2 in a bang-the-boards game against the Saratoga Blue Streak in a Division 1 state quarterfinal at Monsey’s Sport-O-Rama. It was the first time since 2009 that Suffern didn’t make the trip to Utica for the state tournament. Continue Reading
