In Memoriam: Linda Leghorn

The Tuxedo community experienced the passing of one of its own recently. Linda Leghorn, a spirited  light who fought against odds, and gave hope and a message of inspiration to those she met.

Sloatsburg Crash Hospitalizes Drunk Driver

Updated: Traffic backed up Thursday evening in Sloatsburg along Rt. 17 in the center of the village as an apparently drunk driver engaged in a bout of live action bumper car.

According to Steve Lieberman in LoHud, 71-year old James Bryant was charged with DWI, driving without a license, as well as a few other citations, after he rammed two other vehicles and then came to a stop on the side of the road, where he sat until police found him. Continue Reading

Gone is the tattered facade of the old Suffern OTB across from the train station at Park Place on Orange Avenue. The darkened windows and parking lot pitted with potholes have been replaced by the new clean, well-lighted Rainbow Ace Hardware home supply store. Continue Reading

Winter Storm Warming Causes Early School Dismissal

A winter storm alert is in effect for Rockland County though 6 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23 — call it the Dakota Whiteout.

school&weatherWith the recent Polar Vortex reaching its icy paw into the region, plunging temperatures down to zero degrees, the Lower Hudson Valley prepares for another cold blast moving east on the winds and coming in from the Dakotas. Temperatures are expected to dip down below zero Tuesday night, with breezy gusts carrying possibly heavy snow fall Tuesday night through Wednesday early morning.

Due to the forecast, the Ramapo Central School District has announced that students will be on early dismissal Tuesday, January 21. The early dismissal schedule is as follows: 

Suffern High School 11:05 am
Suffern Middle School 11:35 am
Early Elementary Buildings 12:05 pm 
Late Elementary Buildings 12:35 pm

 

The incoming winter storm is expected to bring gusts of up to 30 mph and drop four to eight inches of snow in parts of Rockland. A winter storm warming for the area was issued by the National Weather Service. T

The Ramapo Central School District will make any announcements regarding Wednesday school schedule at a later time.

Village Board Business, Budgets & Community

The Sloatsburg Village Board began the year with a bang with its first official meeting of the year this past Tuesday that included a busy agenda.

VillageBoardfriedmanwrightTown of Ramapo Councilman Daniel Friedman attended the meeting as part of his on-going tour of the various town villages.

Minutes of recent board meetings were ratified, which included November’s village budget hearing and December’s re-organizational meeting. In the December meeting, Village Trustee Peter Akey was named Deputy Mayor. Continue Reading

Leadership And Local Rule In Ramapo Central School District

The Ramapo Central School District has a long, proud educational history that has provided a recognizably high quality education to students throughout the western communities of the Town of Ramapo. The 2013 school budget process brought together many voices, both for and against busting the state property cap to fund the district’s expansive personnel and programs. 

RamapoCentralIn the end, district residents voted 1,602-528 for the $128 million dollar budget, which had a tax levy of 1.99%. The budget included a number of program and staff cuts and the vote implied that district residents were in agreement with the Board of Education to hold the line on taxes while the district streamlined the system to meet budget demands.  Continue Reading
