There’s more going on at Sloatsburg Wine than you might think. The store tucked next to Hayward’s Deli on the Route 17 byway through Sloatsburg, NY, is a familiar crossroads for locals.

Now Suffern resident Olga Lukashyk, along with family, including sister Iryna Moskalyk, have taken on the wine and liquor store. Iryna mentioned the interesting changes in Sloatsburg as a catalyst to talk Keith Reardon into selling the store. Ramapo Hamlet residents have gotten an eviction reprieve. During the first week of October residents were delivered eviction notices by the Town of Ramapo. The Town Council had determined to sell off the hamlet land.

Hamlet of Ramapo residents got an eviction reprieve from the Town’s decision to raze the some 15 homes and sell off the 20 hamlet acres for light industrial or commerical use.

CBS2, News12, The Journal News, and other outlets reported on the eviction by the town. People voiced a certain outraged — not only related to the eviction but the sudden proposed land use change for the Hamlet, especially with Ramapo development a front and center issue for residents. The Village of Sloatsburg’s skate park has fallen into disrepair due to its particular location at the Community Fields — the concrete surface has undergone repeated flooding and cycles of freezing and thawing, leaving the rink unrepairable.

The Skate Rink at the Community Fields was built in the 1980s during the resurgence of public skating and roller blading. It now exists in a state of limbo — currently both unusable and unrepairable. 2017 has been a year of both planning and execution. Stop over at Harmony Hall for an afternoon seasonal celebration of summer. The Friends of Harmony Hall and Town of Ramapo sponsor the Saturday, June 17, event — Music for the Summer Solstice. The event is free and open to the public and is set to include a nature walk around the Harmony Hall grounds and peek at the curator’s Blunt Mountain Mint plantings — mountain mint is native to the Highlands with a variety growing in the nearby Ramapo Mountains … there’s even a report of the Hoary Mountain Mint growing wild up on Torne. The NYSDOT Region 8 Complete Streets Project for Route 17 promises change for Sloatsburgers. Just how much change will take place now rests with the Village Board. Where it all began … 1 Liberty Rock Road and Route 17 at the Sloatsburg Public Library.

The Village of Sloatsburg Board opted to explore options more before making its Complete Streets recommendation. Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright announced at the past Tuesday, May 23, board meeting that Trustees John Bonkoski and Tom Buckley wanted to meet with the New York State Department of Transportation Region 8 Complete Streets team, led by Sandra Jobson, to gather more information on the options being presented to the Village. The Village of Sloatsburg didn’t let morning rain ruin its Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 29. Although the Village cancelled the scheduled parade, the local Fire Hall was filled by residents and veterans, scouts, the Suffern High School Band, and guest dignitaries to mark the occasion.
