The sudden shift to warmer weather and holiday spirits brought people out over the weekend to Sloatsburg’s Sunday celebrations, that included village caroling, tree lighting and a round of visits by Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Visitors also gathered at Harmony Hall, the 1848 mansion which was dressed up in finery for its annual Victorian Holiday December 2.

The Sloatsburg Village Board meeting last Tuesday evening was nearly standing room only. Officials came from across the county to attend the village’s special veterans remembrance ceremony that included recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 1643.
“We have to make sure that our veterans coming back from Afghanistan, that the last place we send them is to the unemployment line,” said NY State Sen. David Carlucci, who’s working to create state legislation to help veterans and seniors.

The annual game of lawn football is one of those that plays out in neighborhoods and parks in towns all over the country. A collection of Sloatsburg sons got together Thursday morning for their own friendly but spirited game of football played on the adjoining Lawns of Harmony Hall and the Sloatsburg Public Library. It’s now stamped and official. The smoldering mulch pile operated by Perfect Cut at the Tuxedo Public Works Department property on Long Meadow Road in Sterling Forest caused the March fish kill along Warwick Brook. The mulch pile, and perhaps those pesky beavers.
“The findings of this water chemistry monitoring clearly indicate that Caretakers Marsh and the upper reaches of the south branch of Warwick Brook have highly eutrophic conditions resulting in chronic oxygen depletion and adverse impacts on water quality and ecological habitat.” — from a Water Chemistry and Ecological Assessment report prepared by Land Use Ecological Services for the Town of Tuxedo.
