Longtime Sloatsburg resident Richard Cook passed away on June 5, surrounded by his family, the thing he held nearest and dearest. He was 78 years old.
Cook was a quiet participant in Sloatsburg’s community, devoted to St. Joan of Arc Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Sloatsburg Public Library, where he was a Trustee and Financial Officer. He was a strong advocate for Library children’s programs and was the project leader on installing new fencing at the Library – his last effort as an active board member. Continue Reading

Earth Day was born way back in another time in the country’s history, during upheavals of the 1960s, when pollution streamed from industrial smokestacks and oil spills in waters killed dolphins, fish and sea birds. It was a time when car windows were casually rolled down and trash was freely pitched to the side of the road. American environmental regulations were born in tan Age of Aquarius so to speak. Sloatsburgers are very familiar with the Ramapo as the river runs right through the village which sits at the foot of Wrightman’s Plateau and Torne Mountain. The Tuxedo Fire Department is always on hand at the annual Bonfire Blaze.
The Town of Tuxedo figured out a creative way to dispose of holiday trees and wreaths, which mostly being pine products, can pose a fire hazard and be a problem. Create a community event where you burn the whole lot. Thus was born the annual Night Brightening Blaze Bonfire, hosted by the Tuxedo Recreation Department. Continue Reading

People began to gather at Nyack’s Veterans Park Saturday morning, January 20, in solidarity with participants in the second Women’s March taking place across the country.
This weekend marks the one year anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration, his first full year in office and also the massive nationwide Women’s March. A year ago on January 21, hundreds of thousands of women and men across the country hit the streets in protest in a mass demonstration of people peaceably assembling for social and economic justice and civil liberty — with many anxious that the country was on the cusp of radical change.
This weekend, while the U.S. Congress plays hardball party politics and debates the merits of shutting down the government, President Trump purportedly decided it was best to cancel his appearance at a $200,000 per person Victory Campaign fundraiser at his private millionaire’s club Mar-a-Lago in Florida, though the fundraiser will go on.
Many in Rockland County opted to meet up in Nyack’s Veterans Park on Saturday to attend a rally in solidarity with the second national Women’s March.
Meanwhile, thousands of men and women across the country are out marching during the second Women’s March.
Nyack, NY saw a turnout of people who rallied at Veterans Park and featured an appearance by New York Assemblymember Ellen Jaffe, who represents NY District 97 in Rockland County that covers constituents from Suffern and Montebello east to Nyack.

Participants in Nyack gather with colorful signs containing pithy messages on why they were there. Influenced by the the recent #MeToo and #TimesUp movement, both rooted in widespread reports of sexual harassment and worse by men across all walks of life, today’s marches were an effort to demonstrate solidarity on issues of equal rights and the right of people to peaceably assemble and vociferously redress grievances.

The NYSDOT Region 8 is set to provide a Sloatsburg Complete Streets Project informational status update to the Village Board at the Municipal Building on Tuesday, February 13, at 6 p.m.
Sloatsburgers last got together some seven months ago to discuss the on-going Complete Streets project with the New York State Department.
