Marcello Puts On A Show In Suffern

The Village of Suffern recently announced the formation of a new Downtown Committee that will be tasked with helping to shape a revitalization effort that attracts more people to the village center.

One business owner in particular enthusiastically endorsed Mayor Trish Abato’s plan, even inviting the committee to hold its first meeting at his restaurant, with lunch on the house. Marcello Russodivito, owner and chef extraordindaire of Marcello’s Ristorante, has been off working on his own as a one-man economic whirlwind. His popular Italian eatery in Suffern already serves  as a lively center of dining and nightlife along Lafayette Street. Whether it’s a quite birthday dinner celebration, wine tasting with friends, cooking class, or jazzy evening at the restaurant’s piano bar, Marcello’s is a hive of activity. Continue Reading

When the winds and waters of Hurricane Irene washed through Rockland County some two years ago, certain parts of Suffern got hit particularly hard. The Mahwah River flooded homes in the Squires Gate community along the Mahwah River, especially on Lonergan Drive, where some residents found themselves waist deep in water that made their homes uninhabitable. The Tuxedo community experienced the passing of one of its own recently. Linda Leghorn, a spirited  light who fought against odds, and gave hope and a message of inspiration to those she met.

Updated: Traffic backed up Thursday evening in Sloatsburg along Rt. 17 in the center of the village as an apparently drunk driver engaged in a bout of live action bumper car.

According to Steve Lieberman in LoHud, 71-year old James Bryant was charged with DWI, driving without a license, as well as a few other citations, after he rammed two other vehicles and then came to a stop on the side of the road, where he sat until police found him. Continue Reading

Winter Storm Warming Causes Early School Dismissal

A winter storm alert is in effect for Rockland County though 6 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23 — call it the Dakota Whiteout.

school&weatherWith the recent Polar Vortex reaching its icy paw into the region, plunging temperatures down to zero degrees, the Lower Hudson Valley prepares for another cold blast moving east on the winds and coming in from the Dakotas. Temperatures are expected to dip down below zero Tuesday night, with breezy gusts carrying possibly heavy snow fall Tuesday night through Wednesday early morning.

Due to the forecast, the Ramapo Central School District has announced that students will be on early dismissal Tuesday, January 21. The early dismissal schedule is as follows: 

Suffern High School 11:05 am
Suffern Middle School 11:35 am
Early Elementary Buildings 12:05 pm 
Late Elementary Buildings 12:35 pm

 

The incoming winter storm is expected to bring gusts of up to 30 mph and drop four to eight inches of snow in parts of Rockland. A winter storm warming for the area was issued by the National Weather Service. T

The Ramapo Central School District will make any announcements regarding Wednesday school schedule at a later time.
