One of Sloatsburg’s own, Elona Stella, lost her brave battles with breast cancer, leukemia and kidney disease over the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend on Saturday, January, 14. She was just 57 years old.

The Tuxedo Hudson Company was recently awarded a $750,000 Mid-Hudson Economic Development Council grant for its proposed Tuxedo/Sloatsburg revitalization effort that includes demolishing the old Tuxedo Inn building and a complete renovation of the former IGA into office space and a restaurant.
Sometimes progress can appear in the smaller details. This holiday season Sloatsburg and Tuxedo have vibrant light displays along Route 17 going through the center of the communities. The hazards of local firefighting along the New York Thruway were on display this past Friday, December 16, when the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a car carrier fire.
A car carrier caught fire on the New York Thruway near the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza on Friday evening, December 16. The Sloatsburg and Hillburn Fire Departments responded.
A car carrier caught fire near the Travel Plaza Friday and was ablaze when the Sloatsburg Fire Department responded at approximately 8:36 p.m. and kicked into action by flowing water. But the nature of the blaze, which included rubber from tires, needed the expertise of the Hillburn Fire Department‘s fire fighting foam.
The SFD is one of the many fire departments contracted by the New York State to respond to Thruway incidents, wth the SFD responsible for specific mile markers that includes the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza. A majority of the SFD’s calls are for NYS Thruway incidents, which often can be the most unpredictable and hazardous due to volume and type of traffic traveling the Thruway.

An apparent switch fire flared on the tracks at the Sloatsburg Train Station Tuesday morning.
Morning commuters at the Sloatsburg Train Station reported a small track fire Tuesday morning, December 13. With the 7:25 a.m. train running a few minutes late, an apparent electrical switch fire flared on the tracks. The incident was called into the Sloatsburg Fire Department which promptly responded.
The SFD officially booked the incident as a small “brush, mulch, rubbish” fire. Continue Reading
Members of the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department greet Sloatsburg’s new 78′ Aerial Ladder Truck, which was delivered to the Village at the beginning of December 2016.
The sky was still lit up with colorful clouds on the recent Friday evening that Sloatsburg’s new 78′ Aerial Ladder Truck arrived in the village Municipal Lot. Word of mouth spread as members of the Sloatsburg Fire Department made their way over to Village Hall to take a look at the department’s first ever ladder truck.
The 78′ Ladder Truck, along with an on-order new rescue/pumper truck, will allow the department to meet nearly all of its firefighting needs – for now and into the future. Continue Reading

The dynamic duo were for many years the social centerpiece of their table. As Mary’s health began to fail, Rose watched over her, ensuring that Mary enjoyed her afternoons among longtime friends.
