Midnight car fire off Waldron Terrace in Sloatsburg kills a man, is under investigation

The Sloatsburg Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived Tuesday morning to the scene on Waldron Terrace in Sloatsburg, where a dead body was found by a burned out car in the early morning hours.

The Sloatsburg Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived Tuesday morning to the scene on Waldron Terrace in Sloatsburg, where near midnight the Sloatsburg Fire Department discovered a burned man (who died at the scene) by a car on fire.

The Town of Ramapo Police have called the midnight car fire at the end of Waldron Terrace in Sloatsburg “definitely suspicious.” Continue Reading

Decorated Sloatsburg WWII Veteran George Heller Passes Away

Longtime Sloatsburg resident George Heller went through Hell and back during his days fighting for the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 101st Airborne Division during WWII.

Heller’s WWII adventure sounds like something out of Captain America — he participated in a few combat infantry air jumps but they all counted — one at Normandy before D-Day and one near Veghel for Operation Market Garden. And then, during the battle of the Bulge, Heller was hit by German counter-attack shrapnel and seriously wounded at Bastogne, France. Continue Reading

Local fire departments respond to Friday night Suffern Bridge Street house blaze

The Suffern Fire Department fought a fierce house fire Friday, assisting by mutual aid from surrounding fire departments. The blaze at Bridge Street is still under investigation, according to the Suffern Poice Department.

The Friday night Bridge Street fire in Suffern saw a house go up in flames while many area fire departments responded in mutual aid. The Suffern Police Department responded within a minute of the emergency 911 call that came in around 9:40 p.m. — but when police officers arrived, the house was already burning, with heavy flames coming from the top floor. The Place with the Yellow Brick Walkway: Sloatsburg’s Historic McCready House

The Robert and Mary McCready House on Route 17 in north Sloatsburg, also known as Westwind, was built in 1889 and is currently being restored to its former prominence by Edward Marse. The home is listed on the New York and National Registers of Historic Places, only the 3rd Sloatsburg residence to be listed.

Sloatsburger Ed Marse has nearly always had an interest in antiques and local history. Marse often visited the old Blue Barn Antiques while growing up, searching through the many valuables stored in the 70 foot long former livery barn on the Waldron property — currently under renovation by Michael Bruno and the Tuxedo Hudson Company. Village Gathers For Annual Sloatsburg Memorial Day Parade

Members of the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department lead the 2016 Memorial Day Parade. The SFD held its first meeting on November 27, 1923, at the Henry Club which still stands.

Members of the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department lead the 2016 Memorial Day Parade. The SFD held its first official meeting on November 27, 1923, at the Henry Club which still stands on Route 17 and was once a thriving community gathering place for dances and other entertainment.

While other village Memorial Day celebrations and parades across the Hudson Valley were cancelled due to early morning threatening weather, Sloatsburg carried on with its scheduled program — to the delight of many. Continue Reading

The Sloatsburg Senior Center Holds Luncheon and Birthday Party for Residents Who Turned 90

Seniors and family members enjoyed a lunch complete with birthday cake at the Sloatsburg Senior Center, which celebrated those members who turned 90 years old this year.

Seniors and family members enjoyed a lunch at the Sloatsburg Senior Center, complete with birthday, cake as residents who turn 90 years old this year were celebrated.

There must be something to Ramapo Mountain  water in the Village of Sloatsburg. On a recent May Wednesday, the Sloatsburg Center Center celebrated those community members who turned (or will turn this year) 90 years old. Some five Sloatsburgers were on hand for the the day’s festivities, which included a lunch and birthday cake. Continue Reading

The Village History Tour and Graduating Seniors

Heading into the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, Sloatsburg has a full schedule. Tuesday kicks things off with the 16th Annual Recognition of Graduating Seniors for the Class of 2016. Tuesday evening, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Village of Sloatsburg Board of Trustees will celebrate Sloatsburg's graduating seniors Tuesday, May 12 -- Sloatsburg students have contributed to academic and athletic excellence throughout area schools.

The Village of Sloatsburg Board of Trustees celebrates Sloatsburg’s graduating seniors Tuesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.

The program takes place at Sloatsburg Village Hall and is a popular and traditional  send-off for local high school seniors,  many of whom started school just down the road as students at Sloatsburg Elementary School. Continue Reading
