Ken Linsner lives surrounded by Tibetan thangka and Samurai swords, Japanese paintings, and plenty of books — several libraries’ worth. It’s the life of the mind as lived in the world of art and every conceivable art object possible, from an older aunt’s long-held paintings to that silverware collection passed down through the generations to a rare Tibetan kapala — sacred sculpted skull. April came in like a lion for Ken Hayward, longtime proprietor of popular Haywards Deli and Market in the heart Sloatsburg on Rt. 17. One of his favorite employees, Marie P. Borrillo, 61, had suffered a heart attack over the last weekend in March and was at Good Samaritan Hospital. Then late Monday afternoon on April 2, Hayward learned that Marie, who opened the store mornings and often acted as his right hand, had died. Hayward spent the rest of the day calling people to let them know the news. Continue Reading

It started with a simple letter in the mail. The Village of Sloatsburg was asking each of a select group of residents to be part of a newly formed committee. Curious about the letters, the group met, compared letters and all agreed the cause was worth the effort — go out into the community and raise funds for Sloatsburg students. They named themselves the Sloatsburg Students’ Scholarship Committee. Continue Reading

Sloatsburg — It appears as a beacon of light and activity, tucked into the neglected, dull-brown awning topped strip mall that passes for Sloatsburg’s downtown business district. Proprietors Lisa and Alex Zhao have quietly gone about converting blight into a place where beauty is the business of the day. Like bees to summer flowers, customers are drawn to the cozy bustle of the Zhaos’ Golden Nails & Spa II, whether for a quick touchup or complete makeover or to pass on the rites of a manicure and pedicure from mother to daughter. Sloatsburg — From the outside, the fitness center could be mistaken for a high-end auto or machine shop. The space looks and feels different from your typical gym — it’s wide open with high ceilings that bounce light off glossy white walls. A green turf carpet covers the floor for running, and there is a lot running. And where a typical gym is clotted with equipment, this gym has a smaller weight section, mostly free weights to focus on a full range of motion. There are power sleds for pushing, big hanging bags for kicking, medicine balls to bounce and toss, ropes to swing and climb and for resistance training. Continue Reading

Sloatsburg — Sometimes it comes down to that little bit of effort a student or athlete puts in alone, off the field or away from the classroom, that makes a real difference. These days, players and parents from all sorts of Suffern High School sports and activity programs are putting in some of that extra work at the FieldHouse, located at the Indian Rock Plaza in Suffern. Sloatsburg — Hikers into Harriman State Park know it as pretty much the last stop for a bite of lunch, bottled water or supplies. Locals like the convenience store and deli counter, where most mornings there’ll be a coffee run as residents head out Rt. 17 on their way to work. The building has been on Seven Lakes Drive forever, since Bob and Dolores Manning opened shop as Miele’s back the 1950s, serving ice cream and hot dogs at the takeout window. But Sterlington Station is still sort of a secret in Sloatsburg. Continue Reading
