When all is said and done, Michael Bruno has already made a material difference in the Village of Sloatsburg. He bought a few properties and opened a quaint farm stand, sure. But he has also offered a picture of a kind of future for Sloatsburg as a destination for hikers and bikers, where people from New York and throughout the Hudson Valley visit the village and stay a moment — instead of speeding through while glancing at boarded up buildings.
Some people have voiced concern that that particular concept might actually bring people to the Village. But the reality of small village economics is that Sloatsburg will shortly need a broader housing base or a bigger taxable business base to continue to provide the cozy services its residents have grown to enjoy.
Word is that that Blue Barn Market will close for the season after this weekend (October 8 and 9) and isn’t planning to open up again until spring or summer 2017.
Sadly it’s time to close for the season. By next summer we will have reinvented the Blue Barn and hope you will come see what we do with it over the winter and spring. — from Blue Barn Market mailing
Bruno and his Tuxedo Hudson Company purchased a swatch of property in the center village and within the span of a spring and summer changed the dynamics and possibilities for the future of the Village. Take the THC effort out of the equation and springtime in Sloatsburg would wither and blow away like a weathered brown oak leaf.
There’s a reason that the Village designated the central area along Route 17 as mixed use zoning, encouraging precisely the kind of land use that Bruno has discussed — nothing has been officially proposed by Bruno or the Tuxedo Hudson Company to the Village to date.
A cluster of bed and breakfasts and inn complete with pool in the center village, surrounded by the Blue Barn Market and coffee house, is precisely the type of food and leisure draw that Sloatsburg could use. Ask the owners of Characters or Seven Lakes Station or the ladies of Rocco’s Salon or Hayward’s Deli or Stone Meadow Inn if they believe Sloatsburg needs a few more customers walking around.
The Blue Barn Market will close for the season after this weekend
The Blue Barn in the Village of Sloatsburg is open Saturday and Sunday with freshly picked produce from farmers in Chester, New York. “Bruffins” will be served as a special thank you to everyone that has been supportive to the Tuxedo Hudson Company effort. Show the love and think about stopping by.
The renovated Blue Barn has provided a surge of hope to many people in the Village, and beyond, that good things are about to happen in the area. It has certainly provided a welcome draw for the center village on weekends – love the free coffee and samples of good things to eat.
Whether because of the weather, as suggested in the Blue Barn Market mailing. Or because, perhaps, of a vocal minority who has complained bitterly of noise from the area or of a dumpster or too many cars visiting the area, the end result is that this iteration of the Blue Barn Market experiment is ending in Sloatsburg for now.
Let’s hope that there is more to come.

Well, it’s a website with some social media that covers news and community life in and around Sloatsburg, promoting the Village here and provoking conversation about important local issues there. It’s independent of the Village of Sloatsburg and does its own thing (if that confuses you, so be it). We appreciate the many many readers.
