Sloatsburg Elementary art students went all out this year to produce an epic art show. With POP Goes the Hero as the theme, art students explored their inner superhero.
SES students were artists were decked out in their Pop art, crime-fighting finest during the May 19 art opening night at the school, which was considerably supported by the PTA Art Show and chairperson Cherish MacRobbie.
Parents and members of the community toured through the Sloatsburg Elementary School, which was alive in colorful art in range of media created by K-5 students.
Art teacher Theresa Dolan said the inspiration behind his year’s show was partly due to the cultural obsession with superheroes.
“Our students are very much aware of what goes on in the world,” Dolan said, “whether through media, discussion with their families or with peers and education. We don’t always realize the effect it has on them and how stressful and burdening it can be to their performance in school and socially.”
Dolan said that the students focused on those things about their heroes that attracted them, which included courage, honor, integrity, and perseverance.
Dolan also said that this year’s student production was expanded to include “wire portraits of our graduating class of fifth-graders, graphic novels/comics, multidimensional art, and introduced new areas of art history.”
