With the recent snow and ice and wintry weather knocking area residents off schedule, following are a few school notes and news items many might have missed.

For example — did you know that the Suffern High School wrestling team just got crowned as Rockland County Champs? That’s the first county wrestling crown the Mounties have won in some seven years. Area wrestling coaches also paid tribute to Suffern and longtime Ramapo Central School District guidance counselor and coach Mickey DeSimone, who died suddenly and tragically this past December.

Suffern also produced several county champs, including Stephem Lauro, Peter Pjetri and Daiton Powell.
The Suffern Girls Track Team fell short of winning the Rockland/Northern County Championships at the Armory in New York Sunday, February 1. The girls team placed second out of 21 teams, while the boys team placed fifth.

Ramapo Central School District was recently named the top district in Rockland County by Niche Rankings, an independent evaluator of school districts nationwide. Niche.com uses various means of ranking districts, including neighborhood reviews, school test scores and various district quality of life evaluations.Ramapo Central ranked the 32nd best school district in the state of New York with an A+ score. Sloatsburg Elementary School achieved a ranking of 65th best public elementary school in New York, also scoring A+.
