A sign of the times — Sloatsburg poised to complete Village street sign replacement

Posted on 24 July 2018 by Editor

A street sign replacement project that began nearly five years ago in Sloatsburg is now entering its fourth and final phase, with the end result that the village will have nearly all new street signs.

You might call it an anchor Village revitalization project. Nearly five years ago Village of Sloatsburg Trustee Peter Akey launched his street sign replacement project with the dual intent of beautifying the Village via new signage and replacing older small-lettered and, in some cases, rusting signs.

Village of Sloatsburg Trustee and Deputy Mayor Peter Akey inaugurated a sign improvement/replacement project in Sloatsburg. Here, Akey stands at Brook Street, which where the fourth and final phase of the program will soon see street signs replaced.

The initial project was funded in 2014 by part of leftover funds from a New York State Downtown Revitalization Member Item Initiative Grant from the state of New York. The cost for that first phase of the project $7,900, with the revitalization grants paying for 13 new signs and posts along the Route 17 central village corridor.

Over the last few years the project has continued, wth the fourth and final phase poised to invest some $13,000 to replace the remaining old Village public street signs with new signs and posts. The new signs and posts now populate nearly the entire Village.

Akey, who serves as a Trustee and Deputy Mayor, has had an active hand in promoting revitalization throughout the Village, often through projects that improve and transform existing properties. The sign project is one such effort by Akey to renew the Village, as is his work managing the Community Pool, his advocacy on the upcoming Brook Street Park renovation, and as liaison to the Sloatsburg Revitalization Committee.

Akey has worked closely with Village Clerk Thomas Bollatto on the sign project, which has included other additions to the village, especially the upgraded and enhanced Welcome to Sloatsburg just south of the village, the Justice Court sign that hangs in front of the Municipal Building, and Senior Center sign — which already needs a fresh coat of paint.

The rustic-looking hunter green street signs, with antique green scroll work and finial atop the posts, now compliment the other municipal signage around the Village.

The Sloatsburg Department of Public Works has installed the new signs.
