Think about this for a moment — you’re feeling tired, run down. The sluggish feeling just won’t shake. And then one day you just stop working right and collapse.
Doug Corbett, popular trainer and fitness instructor at Rockland Peak Performance, found himself in this very situation this past June. Corbett had been feeling like a “zombie” for a few weeks while training clients at RPP. Finally, one day, with his heart rate racing and jaw swelling, Corbett hit the wall and was rushed to the hospital.
The diagnosis came back as AML, a form of leukemia. That very June day, Corbett went from feeling sluggish to rallying all available resources to fight off the cancer. At the hospital, doctors discovered that Corbett’s blood work showed over 90% infection and he underwent an immediate blood transfusion.
On September 17, Corbett is scheduled to have a bone marrow transplant.
Now, Corbett’s RPP family is rallying around in support and throwing a special Team Doug fundraiser Sunday, September 7, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Rhodes North Tavern. For $35, those attending will participate in a few great raffles that include cooking classes at Marcello Ristorante in Suffern, a gift certificate to Auntie El’s, the chance to win a Spin Bike, private training sessions at RPP, and much more.
Nunzio Signore, owner of RPP, will also play at Sunday’s fundraiser with his band El Camino from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
All proceeds go to Team Doug to help Corbett cover medical bills. If you’d like to contribute to the cause, just click on the Donate button and lend a hand.
Signore said Corbett has been essential to helping create RPP’s success. “He’s one of the guy,” said Signore about Corbett, adding that Doug was also close personal friend in need of the RPP family’s support. Signore and Corbett’s co-workers at RPP have put together the fundraiser which is also connected to a GoFundMe.com page where people can donate to the cause.
Responding well to treatment, Signore said that Sunday’s fundraiser will be a sort of send-off as Corbett prepares for the next step in his treatment. Unable to work, Corbett’s family is attempting to raise as much money as possible to help him with his current and future bills.
“Doug has given so much of himself to RPP and it’s clientele and now is the time to give it back and let him know how much he means to us,” said Signore.
The RPP/Nunzio Signore GoFundMe effort to support Doug Corbett extends beyond the September 7 fundraiser. If you’d like to contribute any amount at any time, just click onto the Team Doug page.
