Gone is the tattered facade of the old Suffern OTB across from the train station at Park Place on Orange Avenue. The darkened windows and parking lot pitted with potholes have been replaced by the new clean, well-lighted Rainbow Ace Hardware home supply store.
The family-operated store had a very soft opening, without fanfare, on this past Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday. The two-story, super-stocked store could be just the retail beacon the Village of Suffern has been looking for — a store within walking distance of village center. Rainbow Ace has shelves full of home goods and garden supplies.
Think a sort of combination CVS (without pharmacy services), Target, and a dash of Walmart, with the local hardware store sprinkled in. There are simple three panel wooden screens on the lower floor, along with other furniture, PUR faucet filters, plumbing goods, shovels, t-shirts, and plenty of kitchen and home wares.
The store’s still-empty coolers along the back wall will soon be filled with fresh eggs and milk and other selections.
The Dizzia family have said the Suffern store will take time to adjust its stock to the needs of the village, which in time could mean more food items.
The Dizzias completely renovated the formerly blighted OTB building into a colorful retail space — and have hired some 15-20 locals to date. The family operates another Rainbow Ace Hardware in New York City that has been in operation for more than 20 years, with many staff members having worked at the store nearly that long.
The official grand opening of the Suffern Rainbow Ace store will take place when the cold weather breaks in March or April, complete with a celebration.
For now, Rainbow Ace Hardware is open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. With shelves full of all sorts of items, big and small.
