One of Western Ramapo’s bumpiest bridges has been given some TLC this week. The Korean War Memorial Highway Bridge carries Rt. 59 traffic over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Hillburn, NY at the entrance to Torne Valley Road. New York Department of Transporation contractors were working the last Tuesday and Wednesday of July cutting clean sections of concrete on the southbound lane. The end result is a smooth new section of bridge road.
A welcome sight for the many commuters who often drive the Rt. 59 corridor.
The bridge had become a nuisance of sorts as many motorists dodged the road’s most pitted parts when traveling Rt. 59 to and from Suffern or Sloatsburg — or the Torne Recreational Center down Torne Valley Road.
This past February during the high snows of winter, NY State Senator David Carlucci, D-New City, called on Rockland residents to report potholes to the NY DOT. Town of Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence also swung into action with a social media campaign for Ramapo residents to report potholes to Town Hall via Twitter @CSLPotHoleAlert.
The St. Lawrence effort saw Ramapo Highway Department crews repair reported potted roads at various locations throughout the town in a call and response to fix deterioration from wet winter conditions.
The Korean War Memorial Highway Bridge was one location that needed NY DOT action, along with several particularly prolific potholes on Rt. 17 along the central village in Sloatsburg, NY (which did receive attention).
Residents can report potholes to the NYDOT at 1-800-Pothole.
