The Tuxedo Hudson Company was recently awarded a $750,000 Mid-Hudson Economic Development Council grant for its proposed Tuxedo/Sloatsburg revitalization effort that includes demolishing the old Tuxedo Inn building and a complete renovation of the former IGA into office space and a restaurant.
Sometimes progress can appear in the smaller details. This holiday season Sloatsburg and Tuxedo have vibrant light displays along Route 17 going through the center of the communities. Tuxedo’s old IGA building (now undergoing a complete makeover) is especially decorated, all compliments of the Tuxedo Hudson Company.

The display of holiday cheer works in tandem with the outstanding traditional spirit seen throughout residential holiday displays, and also says something about the THC effort — that it’s alive and moving along.
THC’s proposed Tuxedo/Sloatsburg revitalization project was recently awarded a Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council grant of $750,000 (half of the some $1.5 million requested), some of which will go toward completion of the IGA build-out. The award also recognizes Tuxedo Hudson’s Michael Bruno’s significant investment in the Orange and Rockland corridor.
The Mid-Hudson Council regional theme for submissions for 2016 was “A Renewed Vitality.”
Out of a total of $83 million in grants award by the MHEC awards, some $3 million dollars was given to Rockland County projects through the Mid-Hudson Council, with some $83 million awarded throughout the entire region, which covers the entire Hudson Valley area, inclduing Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Ultster, and Sullivan counties.
“Our vision of the county as a place where businesses thrive and residents enjoy top-rate services and access to the arts and recreational opportunities has been recognized,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day in a statement about the grant award. “Funding these worthwhile projects will help create jobs and boost our economy.”

Tuxedo Hudson’s proposed revitalization project through the Tuxedo/Sloatsburg corridor has already seen Sloatsburg’s former Blue Barn property transformed into a weekend farm stand, with its future planned as possibly part of a bed and breakfast campus that houses a coffee house, restaurant and bike rental.
The plan for downtown Tuxedo involves the proposed demolition of the former Tuxedo Inn, a popular town meeting spot, the construction of a new pub and grill style restaurant and modern market at the old IGA building that may also include a basement pool hall/bar and 2nd floor conference rooms.
The THC proposal will also promote landscaping improvements throughout the Tuxedo downtown area adjacent to its properties.
The whole Tuxedo Hudson effort along the Tuxedo/Sloatsburg Rt. 17 corridor is rooted in the idea of revitalizing the area via food and park adventure, which is being done by creating overnight accommodations and restaurants — builders often cite the mantra that people follow food.
Currently, the Tuxedo Hudson Company is renovating a parcel of property in Sloatsburg known as the Waldron Houses. The renovation is focused on getting to the bones of the homes and undoing years of patch work and returning the homes to close to original structures.
There is no THC presentation on the calendar at this time for either the Tuxedo or Sloatsburg Planning Boards related to the company’s overall plan for each individual municipality.
Michael Bruno also envisions Sloatsburg as an eventual biker destination, where visitors from the greater New York City region might come to access Harriman and Sterling Forest State Parks.
